1st Annual Boneyard Bash RR
It's been a long 3 years this month that I started hunting for a place where we could create a bike park. This event marked the point where our first trail was solid enough to ride. And hell...if you can ride it, you can race it! Since October we have had a green light to build. Chuk2rs, Colin, Carlos, and James hame been staples building GP Park ever since. And many others have come up repeatedly. I've listed those on site for Boneyard Bash below...please help me out if not on the list so I can add!
Saturday morning saw the first time machinery has shown it's face at Waterman. I was STOKED to meet backhoe Johnny and his side kick Ricky. Johnny does a lot of grading and such for Waterman. But this weekend...he was ours! We put his mini excavator to work right away from the top of Boneyard. It's been so long since I've been around an excavator while it worked, I forgot just how easy it makes the job. And a litteral HORDE of pirate were right behind Ricky finishing what he roughed in. Suddenly our single track DH was turning into a bike park! After our lunch provided by Bash Supporters we continued on til we could stand no more.
Once the sun started going down, the supercross came on TV. We all watched Stewart snag his 3rd in a row. Alcohol was flowing, fireplace burning, and the camp out was on. There is something awesome about having that many riding friends all together on the mountain. I'm pretty sure the warming hut has never been so full. A floor orgy of epic properties. Eventually we all settled in to prepare for race day like good boys and girls.
On Sunday I moved the machine over to cut Capns Folly so we could rip up Boneyard with our sleds. Jason Giampietro led the excavator to glory while we all rode. I bought a shit ton of pipe insulation to protect our forks on the lift. Hunter, Chuk2rs and I installed that around 10am. Then it was time to ride the lift, and RIDE OUR BIKES! Pirates loaded their own bike, and unload the bike behind them. This worked. In fact, it worked a lot better than I thought it would. Props to everyone for that! I had a blast getting 2 non stop runs in!
RACE TIME! High noon hit, and it was time to see what kind of times this trail would turn out. We had Groms, Jr, Special, Sport, Expert, and PRO. I had 6 classes worth of trophies, so I split everyone accordingly. Big thanks to NEMA for making these killer trophies for us! JD helped me work the finish line timing while Jen made sure nobody was cheating at the start. Almost everyone crashed at some point in their run. It was awesome to see everyone charging...enen in the newer sections that really shouldn't be charged like that! :afraid: Denmo and Roger were out spectating making sure nobody was taking cheater lines. Once all was said and done we headed up for the awards ceremony. I'm just glad nobody killed themselves!
Time to wrap up the weekend. Kattak and Trevor went to town cleaning the inside of the warming hut til spic and span. I talked to Ricky about what he got done, and what I needed him to do on Monday. That's right...3 solid days of mini excavator work! I sincerely hopes this leads to a permanent machine on site. If so, we will have this whole park built THIS year! Big thanks to all of you that came out to celebrate this weekend. You've done more to build a bike park in SoCal than any other group ever has. And we're not done yet!
