Re: 2012 Red Bull Rampage RR
I'm not doubting some of the lines were steep and knarly, it's just that there were 4 categories:
1). Difficulty of line.
2). Air amplitude.
3). Control and fluidity.
4). Tricks and style.
Sorge had a great run with all 4 aspects, but C Mac had a banger too.
Sorge's winning run:

I still think sorge's runs were over scored... Steve, opinion since you were there?

I can't wait to check it out on video this morning so I can understand why the guys who watched at home feel this way. I wonder whether people at home realize things like....when Sorge did the bafkflip drop. He used a lippy take off several feet back from the "normal" drop take off. Being there in person, the size difference and added difficulty shows up. I'm going to enjoy watching so I can see both perspectives, and tell you guys exactly what the disconnect is after having seen it both ways.
Here's a horrible phone pick showing how far back he and Semenuk actually did that flip from(only one of the 2 made it ). He's almost fully rotated by the time he's flying over the take off others used. In person, it makes a BIG difference.
And where most would take off:

Sorge won out on difficulty of line, tricks & style, and control and fluidity, I think. Cam McCaul may have gotten him on air amplitude because he did the canyon gap, but Sorge's run/line/tricks were much cooler. At least in person. I got video of both their final runs, but of course they look like gnats at the top. Ha ha.
We didn't get to see this one in person since we weren't there for Qualifying on Friday, but here's a video of Cam Zink's bail:

OK....I just watched a bunch of clips. Some official, and some un-official video. It's such a cliche to say "it's different in person." But wow. Video neuters this event. If there is one thing you plan on watching in person some day....make it Rampage. Cause you haven't seen SHIT otherwise. Guaranteed. On video this looked like just another slopestyle event. The very real danger and unperceived difficulty does NOT translate to video. It's like watching war footage on CNN compared to standing in it. Night and day different.
BTW, as for the judging controversy. There were a couple runs that were underscored for sure. Not Cam's IMO...but Norby's run should have been top 3. Gotta be hard to watch this stuff as a judge and try to put a score on runs.

Nuts!
That was a bitchin' crash! Considering the force and amount of impact, I don't think he could have crashed any better. There's a lot of potential damage there. That boy knows how to crash right!
That's something I was really paying attention to. When a crash or bail out occurred, just how it was done. We all bite it. I don't want to do it too often, but I want to do it right.
Yeah the PB videos that I have seen so far don't illustrate the full scale of some of those lines!
Semenuik, Bareclaw, and a few others that went straight down the face were INSANE!!
Also Cam Zink's line does not look possible in person!
The transfer ramp that Kyle Straight hit is INSANE!

Also Vanderham's step up towards the bottom is MASSIVE...when I first looked at it I thought it was a landing to a drop.
I was kinda on the fence about going at first, but I have to say it has to be one of the coolest events to be a spectator at, esp since you can see most of their lines if you get a good spot (vs a race where you only see people for a few seconds)

Jealous... But ya, the fan perspective shots really give you an idea how rediculous those lines are. I think the arial footage, though gives You scope and altitude of the event, really drowns out the technical and steepness that the ground level fans witness. I mean, they start as dots and get bigger and bigger as they careen down the mountain. It's quite impressive. Going to have to plan to go to the next event.
Oh, btw. How was the riding for the guys that went with their bikes? Pretty good trails out there (at our level)?
We rode Grafton and Flying Monkey. Both were chunky and really techy (lower speed tech) with EXTREME exposure on Flying Monkey.
Also we got to see King Kong from afar...WTF is all I could think!
I really want to ride both trails again now that I know what to expect.
The shuttle road to Flying Monkey is paved and really quick (makes me jealous from SoCal)

in addition to those trails...Myron and I hit a couple of drops at the old Rampage site.....
me hitting a 17'ish drop on the old main ridgeline
Myron hitting a 8'ish drop on another ridge at the old Rampage site
Ejack supervising
getting some help up from other riders
