Northstar Opening Weekend

Went up to Northstar this weekend to get a few lift served runs in. Even though it was just the lower mountain it was just nice to be back riding up in the Sierra's. There's still a lot of snow up there. Driving on 80, I was wishing I brought my skis and skins as Donner Pass still had what is normally a mid April snowpack. Northstar is saying that they should have Zephyr open in two weeks time for the 4th of July weekend, but I'd still say that is optimistic. Right about at 7500, you hit a nice 5 foot wall of snow and the snow only gets deeper as you go up in elevation.

I hope they do a better job with maintaining the trails this summer. The past two summers everything but live wire and karpiel gets seroiusly blown out. I normally take my slopestyle bike to bike parks to keep from putting wear and tear on my DH race bike but its so blown out up there i need the DH rig. Sucks cause I like the little bike for downieville and I hate having to bring both bikes.

Northstar and trail maintenance aren't usually words that belong in the same sentence lol. However, every year they are improving at least a bit. As I understand it, last year the trail crew used most of their budget on overtime for the Pro GRT preparation and digging the track out. That might be a reason they are not trying to dig out the top as fast this year(granted, there is enough snow up there to ski on right now). There are no plans for new trails this year, so hopefully they will try to keep the trails in better shape this summer if they have enough of a budget to do so.Diablito wrote:I hope they do a better job with maintaining the trails this summer. a buddy was just at mammoth last Tuesday boarding.you think nort* has snow.....the sign at the top is covered in snow.like 12-15 feet
