River Bend Bike Park-Lompoc

Somehow, I found myself in Lompoc today so I decided to stop by and see what they had going on.

There's a small group folks building a very impressive bike park. Like the rest of us trying to get these facilities built, they need help. If you happen to be a Santa Barbara local, get your ass over there and lend a hand.

This will be a great side trip to any GP trips to the Gold Coast (Tunnel, Cold Spring, etc). It's not open yet, but they are in the home stretch. They just need to cut a little more red tape and some handy work. The dirt is great and it's a well designed place.

4 years and 500k. That's.....a lot for a level surface build. Glad they are making it to the finish line. Always good to have a park!

My grandparents live there. They contacted the wrong guy. I would have built it for 400,000

Lol....I've forwarded an idea in the past that I think would be interesting. Community gardens are a loved concept by municipalities, and citizens alike. I'd like to see cities simply designate plots of land as bike park "community gardens." Same rules as typical community gardens so riders don't step on each other. Cost to the city $0. Contractors to sue, none. Just ride at your own risk community build bicycle playgrounds. I know it's a wildly new idea. So it would be easy to chastise. But how cool would it be? It seems inefficient watching other park projects rack up "administrative costs" 10 times more than the actual build. I'm not bad mouthing Lompoc btw...don't misunderstand! Successful park build=WIN! I'm talking about the future.

Places like sheep hills are a great example of what the biking community can do for itself if left alone. Not a dime has been spent to build, yet people have come from around the world to ride. And it's been there for decades, being built by new generations of rider/builders. Concept...proven.

Yup, an expensive build for sure. But kudos to those involved for sticking it out. The city and other interested parties gave no allowances. From what I could tell, they had to work and pay every step of the way.

However, the core group has worked their asses off and it shows. They have a great place and they should be proud.

For sure. I know very well the personal effort it takes. Lots of thankless hours spent by riders to make that happen. I'm anxious to see it first hand.
