GoPro 3 Black

Post by jd"MF"grimes on Sat Jan 12, 2013 7:30 pm

OK I pulled the trigger on the expensive GoPro3 Black ($399).
I will be updating this review as I use the the gopro more.
First impressions;
pros-
*the camera and housing is significantly smaller than gopro 1&2
*the set up is also lighter than the previous models
*flat lens on case...it shouldn't scratch as easily as the curved lens
*Wifi remote is waterproof and wearable
*The new case is compatible with all previous mounts (for bikes, boards, helmets, etc)
*Iphone app works great and has a preview...***there is lag time in the preview
*the previous versions LCD BackPack works with the new version
*the video quality in and out of shade and direct sun is great!
*low light video is great
*the quality of the video is very high and contains alot of information
*you can capture video and take photos at the same time
cons-
*a few small parts that are not attached and can be easily lost (accessory/sd card cover and remote insert)
*The Hero 3 isn't compatible with the old cases
*2 different plugs to charge gopro and remote
*micro SD card... so your current gopro SD card will NOT work and you will have to spend money on another one
*a different battery is used...so your backup battery is now useless and you will have to spend money on another one
*only comes with 2 sticky mounts and 3 attachment parts...again more money you will have to spend
*battery life is very short...and even worse when using the Wifi
*it appears to me that you need to be even closer to subject or the rider in front of you than before
*it fucking cost $399

other info-
it took 5gb for 2 short DH runs at 1920x1080 60fps

I already need to buy a micro SD card and a backup battery and extra mounts

stay tuned for more....I will be riding with the camera tomorrow

And the BIGGEST pro is......GoPro 1&2 parts will be ALL OVER the classifieds for cheap. Lots of extra batteries and junk. GPshiv

Yea at first i was bummed with the lag and it actually got better with a recent update but since I mainly use the preview to set my angles for the gopro it doesn't really matter to me much

Dang, I can barely get through a 3hr day of shuttling with the hero 2 and that's with all the leds off.

I miss the hero 1 battery life where you can go 3-4 differ ride days before needing to recharge

im not sure if you if this is what you meant but this is what it shows me as recording time on a fresh 32G card

1080-30 f/s 4h 30m
1080-24 f/s 4h 30m
960-30 f/s 5h 40m
960-48 f/s 4h 30m
720-30 f/s 6h 37m
720-60 f/s 6h 37m
messed with the frames per second for some reason only 960 seemed to change a bit. These were the recording times roughly they seem to vary by a few minutes each time I would go back and forth

My recommendation if you guys do get the new gopro3 the the BLACK edition which is what JD got the other ones are basically like gopro2 other than the smaller size. The Black has more upgrades such as Pro low light and are able to film at higher f/s in the higher formats. Mine is the silver edition but thats because I had issues with my GOpro2 and they upgraded me to this one because it was the most compatible only paid 15 bucks. Wish I would have dished out $100 and I could have gotten Hero3 but im flat broke right now Oh well.

I went with the Drift Ghost due to price and wanted to try something different. I wanted the Sony but all their mounts suck.

I just spend my first day shooting with my black. I shot in 1440-48, Protune, and Raw. Probably not ideal for most filming, but how the hell would I know. Hey JD(or other)...you got any recommended settings for the most common scenarios?
